LotR-fest!

The extended edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was released on DVD last week. Ted and Patricia picked up a copy the first day and invited us over for Lord of the Rings-fest last weekend!

For Lord of the Rings-fest we watched the extended editions of the three Lord of the Rings movies back-to-back-to-back. More than 12 hours of LotR bliss--nothing better in all the Shire! We didn't watch every frame, of course. The Fellowship of the Ring had been playing for a time before we arrived in the morning. And we ate second breakfast, elevensies, and lunch while Fellowship and Two Towers were rolling. We didn't really settle down and watch intensely until Return of the King started. But having all three movies together made for a really great day of movie-watching. Sometimes we chuckled about the continuity lapses, but more often we discussed the differences from the books and whether the change was an improvement that worked better in the film version or not.

To set the mood for the day, Patricia cooked up a great-looking version of Elvish lembas bread that we snacked on. And there was a wonderful chocolate cake which conjured the image of Mt. Doom.

I put Return of the King on my Christmas list this year hoping to complete my extended edition LotR set. I'm still looking forward to watching the movie again, this time perhaps with the director's commentary, or the cast's, and catching some of the behind the scenes extras about the making of the movie.

Lembas bread (and Dr. Pepper? ;-)
