Recall vote
The California governor's recall election is next
Tuesday, and I mailed in my absentee ballot today. Here's how I voted, and
why.
I voted NO to recall Gray Davis. Not because I'm
pleased with the job Gov. Davis is doing, and certainly not because of the
endless calls with recorded politicians urging me to vote one way other the
other. I voted NO because I think it is dangerous to hold our elected
politicians to the short-term whims of a fickle fraction of the public.
Sometimes hard problems (like those facing California today) require bold,
long-term solutions. If we oust our state leaders at the drop of a hat we will
never convince them to invest in solutions that benefit us in the long run,
especially if the best solutions are a little bit painful in the short
run.
The recall concept is fine, I
guess, but let's save it for serious issues. If we catch Gov. Davis
taking a bribe or declaring war on Oregon or something then we can move to
recall him. In the mean time, let the guy we elected governor just last year
work on the issues at hand. If you don't like his progress by the next election
cycle give the next guy a chance. But give them
a
chance.
